It sounds as if someone banged a door shut.
Now two people are shouting at each other.
Andie frowns, and I’m not pleased either. Can’t a cat eat in peace around here?
“You shouldn’t have left the door unlocked,” a man’s voice booms. “What were you thinking?”
“We were in the room. Why would I need to lock the door?” The timid woman is barely audible.
“We weren’t in the room. We were in the bathroom. Anyone could have walked in, and someone did! Now look what—”
“Honestly, why would I expect another guest to just walk into our room and steal a necklace? This is a nice little B&B in a quaint town. Surely nobody would do that!” It’s clear by how much her voice is shaking that the woman plucked up all her courage to interrupt the man.
Now she keeps completely quiet as the man continues to berate her and call her very unkind names.
Andie marches to the door and opens it wide.
“Excuse me,” she interrupts the man. “Did something happen? I couldn’t help but overhear you talk about a stolen necklace?”
Having lost my appetite, I walk over to the door. I’m surprised to see the woman is tall and broad and the man small and puny. From the way they’re behaving and talking to each other, I would have expected it to be the other way around.
I mean, the woman could easily give the man a slap for calling her those names and send him flying along the hallway. Instead, she just stands there, like a sad giant, with hunched shoulders and trembling lips.
The man clearly has a Napoleon complex. That’s a thing with cats, too. I once knew this Burmese tomcat. His yellow eyes were to die for, and his gray fur looked so distinguished, but his personality was the worst. He had a real bee in his bonnet about me being so much bigger than him. What can I say? Maine Coons are a large breed. I will not apologize for that. Needless to say, our romance didn’t last, and it wasn’t long before I gave that wee sourpuss the boot.
I shake off the memory and focus on the here and now.
Napoleon explains to Andie that his wife left an expensive necklace on the nightstand. The couple went to the bathroom to take a bath, and when they returned, the necklace was gone.

Through the glass, I only see the petite brunette witch who works at the B&B, Andie, tidying the kitchen. Perfect! Breakfast should be over, and one guest or another probably didn’t finish their meal.
Andie knows me and lets me in.
“Hey, Tammy,” she coos. “I heard you’re paying us a visit for a couple of days. Do you want to come in?”
I give a short meow, even though it should be pretty obvious that I desire entry, and saunter into the breakfast room.

I always thought Andie was the most sensible of the younger witches. They can be hysterical at times, and they have a flair for drama. But I don’t really care for unrest, and those young witches have brought plenty of that to the coven.
Anyway, I’ve always appreciated Andie’s even-tempered and quiet nature. Apparently I misjudged her, though, because now she goes bananas over me.

All right, I begrudgingly accept all the stroking, but I draw the line at being spoken to like a baby. I mean, come on, I have nothing in common with those tiny humans like Dessie’s annoying six-month-old, so why does she insist on speaking to me like one?
Andie has seen me at Mrs. MacDonald’s and—probably out of respect for the old coven leader—has always restrained herself. Now she really lets her inner feline lover shine through. Despite all that, she doesn’t even know that my name is Mairi. Nobody knew that Mrs. MacDonald named me after her grandmother. So Kenna called me Tammy, and that’s my name now, I suppose.
It should come as no surprise, really, that I’m having an identity crisis.

After letting Andie pet me for a while, I roll over and go to the kitchen, looking at the witch expectantly.
“Oh, are you hungry? Do you want something to eat?”
Duh.
At least Andie’s newly revealed affection for cats makes her a very obedient human. She looks in the cupboards for a can of tuna.

When she discovers I didn’t wait patiently but made a quick meal of a bowl of leftover porridge, she just laughs. And she opens the big can of tuna, anyway.
I think I like this witch, after all. I ought to figure out if she has a familiar yet.
Andie watches me demolish the tuna, but we’re interrupted by a loud noise in the hallway.

Vor ein paar Tagen habe ich MEHR BÜCHER VERKAUFEN von @katja.kleiber in der Post bekommen. Ich habe mich schon drauf gefreut, denn die Autorin hat mich vor einiger Zeit für dieses Buch zum Thema Autorenmarke befragt.

Dieser Ratgeber für Autoren enthält wirklich alles, was man als Selfpublisher oder auch als Verlagsautor über das Buch-Marketing wissen sollte. So umfangreich, praktisch und up-to-date kenne ich das bisher nur von Joanna Penn. Einige ihrer Bücher sind zwar auch übersetzt, aber Katjas Buch hat den Vorteil, dass es sich direkt auf den deutschen Buchmarkt bezieht, und, was ich besonders spannend finde, einige deutsche Autor/innen mit Erfahrungsschatz zu Wort kommen lässt.
Außerdem wird man durch Fragen dazu angehalten, zu reflektieren, welche Marketingmaßnahmen zu einem passen und wie man diese umsetzen kann.
